Education in the 21st Century
There are new and different abilities required is a student is to acquire learning skills today, compared to what was required more than ten years ago. The economy will be in jeopardy if students are not educated in current 21st century skills.
We should not be doing the same things we were doing ten years ago. We no longer need to teach how to email properly when most of the students are instant messaging. Adapting 21st century skills knowledge to a changing world is what we ought to be doing. The world is changing and we need to adapt 21st century skills knowledge to this changing world.
The focus today should be on critical thinking skills, and how to ask questions that require answers from several resources.
Smart Ideas: Classes Revisited
Locating relevant accurate content is why students need to learn instead of making them learn content. If you are creating groups in your class just so that you can check on your teachers’ evaluation that you did it, then you are missing the point of doing it.
A Beginners Guide To Resources
The creation of groups is to teach students how to collaborate with others. Collaboration can be applied globally and not just in the classroom.
We don’t know what the future careers will be. We do not know where they will be or their job description. But what we know is that 21st century skills will require the student to be a critical thinker, problem solver, and have global awareness.
The skills that students should be using every day in class are those that help them in understanding the changing technology environment like social networking and contribution to the development of intellectual texts.
In this adapting, changing world, students should be engaged. We should always be real. Today, using a math app, a student can solve a math problem in 2 seconds. It is even simple to make an essay using Google, and they can text their friends in the next class when you assigned them to do.
Our job as educators is to understand this concept. This knowledge should be used and solve a bigger problem.
If you ask a student to present their findings on a real world problem using class oral presentation skills then this cannot be easily found in YouTube.
This oral presentation would require many skills from the students to prepare if this would be the basis of his assessment; o n how he analyzed the concept. In order to prepare for this oral presentation , he has to first to find relevant information on the topic and he should determine the credibility of the sources. The he writes and edits the script. He also need to chose and sue appropriate images.
Here you implement reading, writing, and research standards, and the last one that is difficult to reach is oral presentation.
We should refocus our priorities as educators. We should teach our children that which will prepare them for the future.
